The standard game starts from 1066 and ends at 1453 and is played across medieval europe and all NPCs and the character you play reflect real people. There is a scoreboard system with prestige points which are benchmarked against European dynasties and this is what you want to aim to beat, but it is not necessary. This makes the game a great RPG as it allows you to create your own stories in playing it.
It entirely depends on what you set as your own measure of success. There is no story or goals for the player to complete. There has been a steady stream of DLC content that is great at expanding the game, but does not feel like it was siphoned off to sit behind a paywall. They have consistently patched the game for not only fixes but improvements. Although the game was released in 2012 it's still heavily supported by Paradox.
